Garfield Green:
2016-2019
In 2016, Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity, along with hundreds of individuals, businesses and organizations, set out to transform the city block where Garfield Elementary School is located. The shuttered school was transformed by GBA, Inc. into market rate loft apartments, while Habitat built eight homes surrounding the school on what used to be a playground and parking lot. Through this project, known as Garfield Green, 20 families have a place to call home and a piece of Rapid City history has been preserved.
Neighborhood surrounding Garfield school: Anamosa as North border, Haines as East border, North St. as South border, and West Blvd. as East border
Coalition organizations:
- Rapid City Police Department
- Community Development Division of the City of Rapid City and Code Enforcement
- NeighborWorks
- GBA
- CAP
- Rapid City - City Council
Goal: Help this neighborhood thrive. This includes walking distance to downtown, shopping, and recreation.
